Travel Times 7

Welcome to Spidertown! We travelled from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh, a direct route diagonally through the country. Our single stop was at 'Spidertown' where we stepped off the bus to be greeted by what seemed like millions of children all carrying...tarantulas.

Fortunately for me, I am quite a fan of holding bunny rabbit sized spiders, but for others this was a nightmare come true. For those unlike myself who weren't so keen on playing with them (seriously, they are so big they become less scary, more like they are fluffy little animals!) there were opportunities to eat them too (after they had been deep fried of course!).

In the photographs you can see a lovely display of crickets, cockroaches, tarantulas and small birds.Yum!

Spidertown was probably one of my millions of highlights, although I do appreciate that for others it may not be quite so enjoyable...

Would you be brave enough to visit Spidertown?

  1. Oh dear this is terrible! I absolutely hate creepy crawlies and I can't believe there is a massive spider on the little boy! Definitely not my cup of tea :P

    1. Ahhh Karen! Your response was like many of the people on the trip! All the little ones carried around their 'pet' spiders. Many of them had names (the spiders I mean, although the children had names too!)

  2. Omg! Wow that is one HUGE taratula! I am one of those people who gets the shivers from spiders like that, but I don't freak out or scream about them. The fluffiness creeps me out even more though. It's really great that you are open to eating all sorts of interesting and whacky foods. I'm assuming you ate some since you said they were yummy (unless that's sarcasm I didn't detect, haha) - most of my friends freak out from that kind of food! But seriously though, deep fried anything is yum! Haha

    1. It's pretty big, I will admit! I'm really lucky that I don't have a problem with spiders. Sadly I didn't get to try any of the food...I would have tried the spiders and crickets, but not cockroaches...I'm not that brave!

  5. That is insane! Did you actually eat the fried insects? I saw this on Hamish & Andy's gap year, was thoroughly freaked out. How can you hold them?! Ahhh!

    1. Unfortunately I didn't get to try anything, but I certainly loved playing with the spiders and holding them! It was on Hamish and Andy's gap year! Hamish was petrified if I remember correctly!
