"What do you think?" Wednesdays - Applying makeup in public

I fear my 'What do you think?" Wednesday posts are coming to an end - I am really struggling with topics to talk about! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I only have one topic for next week and then I am out of ideas!

This week's topic may seem like a bit of a strange one, something that perhaps you hadn't thought about before but it is one of those things that bothers me.

Everyone has those 'things' that other people do that really, really get on their nerves. Whether it be chewing with your mouth open, touching your hair all the time, cracking your knuckles, pronouncing a particular word incorrectly or making a particular sound when you sneeze, I can guarantee that there is some silly little 'thing' in life that really gets on your nerves.

For me, that is applying makeup in public. Weird, right?

I cannot stand seeing people apply their makeup when I am out in public. I'm not talking about freshening up your lipstick or blotting your skin to get rid of that oil, but rather the continual application of foundation or the brushing on of a bit of blush.

Don't get me wrong, it isn't actually something that I see occurring all that often, but occasionally I will stop in at the public toilets (although I avoid such occasions like the plague) and will see someone with the contents of their whole makeup bag sprawled across the bench, reapplying a full face of makeup. 99% of the time it is completely unnecessary too because their makeup is perfectly fine.

I used to know a girl who would carry around concealer in her pocket. She wore a super thick layer of foundation (which, by the way, did not match her skin tone at all) and would literally apply a layer of concealer to what I considered wasn't even a blemish every hour. Every hour!

It bothered me more than you can imagine.

The thing is, I actually have no idea why I feel so funny about it. It really makes me so very uncomfortable. I was trying to think about why this is and I came to the conclusion that maybe it was because I kind of associate applying makeup with getting dressed (and I'm pretty sure getting dressed in public is unacceptable). Maybe it is because I would like to keep up the illusion that I am naturally gorgeous and don't need makeup to look so stunning (I hope you all don't think that I was being serious about that last comment!). Whatever it is, I actually have no why it is that I have this ridiculous 'pet peeve.'

I decided to mention it to a couple of people to see what they thought about it, and I didn't really come across anyone who thought it was all that strange...until I spoke to the males. Every male who I mentioned this to was on my side - they found it weird and uncomfortable. I think for them it was like all girly things - they prefer for them to remain a mystery so that when a female comes out looking all gorgeous it is quite magical, as opposed to them understanding the complicated process that has gone behind the scenes to create such an illusion. Knowing how it was created takes away the magical element. Of course, this theory doesn't apply to me at all, but it was nice to get an idea of their perspective.

Anyhow, basically I have come to no conclusion as to why I feel so funny about this and why it bothers me so much. Like I said, a fresh application of lipstick doesn't bother me in the slightest, it is really just foundation, eyeshadow, mascara, blush etc. that gets under my skin.

Why is this? What on earth makes me think like this? Is there anyone out there who can relate or am I really that strange?

  1. It's quite interesting how people have different pet peeves - one of mine is seeing people brush their hair in public places! Haha I have no idea why but I really get annoyed when I see someone brushing their hair on a train! But in regards to make up it doesn't really bother me. I guess it's because I usually touch up my make up throughout the day and therefore don't pay attention to others when they're doing theirs. Oh and I've never seen someone put on foundation in public either! So maybe that's why haha! Great topic! x

    1. Interesting, because people brushing their hair wouldn't bother me one tiny bit! Because it bothers me so much, no matter how awful I feel my makeup has become I will resist all temptation to do anything about it until I am in the comfort of my own home. How strange I am...nice to know that you can relate in regards to the hair brushing though!

  2. Aww no I love your ideas! I'll try to think of some for you because I absolutely LOVE your Wednesday posts!

And here comes my long winded response...

The whole idea of walking into a public bathroom, which is already gross, and seeing some slapper with her makeup all over the gross counter makes me shudder! I have no problem with simple reapplying but when I see that kind of thing, I also hate it! Firstly, why the heck are you carrying that around all day? I can barely carry around all my necessary things (ei phone, wallet, asthma puffer and a stick of lipstick) I couldn't imagine carrying around my whole makeup collection! Secondly, you just put all your lovely makeup down on some disgusting place that you have no idea whether or not it's been cleaned this century! That would be enough for me to throw my makeup away! Ew!
But the reason it really bugs me? The girls who do it always seem to be "snog marry avoid" girls. They seem to be those gross superficial girls who only care about what they look like. Now, don't get me wrong, I know now ALL of them are like that.. but it kinda seems like most of them are. I think that's why it bugs me. And I mean, why would you leave your boyfriend or whatever waiting for you while you reapply... he may think you're having other bathroom related problems (ahem.. number 2) and that's not appealing at all! Hahaha!
But no, it's kind of common courtesy. What happened to going to the bathroom to reapply make-up, instead people just do it wherever they can find a mirror! Like you said, ruins the mystery, and like you said, we don't undress in public! (Although that seems to be changing these days too... ick!)

Great topic again, can't wait to hear other people's thoughts on the matter! And I'll do my best to think up some interesting subjects for you :D

    1. Oh my goodness you are hilarious! I agree, it seems as though it would be terribly inconvenient to carry around all your makeup for the day. I also wouldn't love the idea of spreading it out on the counter of a public bathroom. Hmmm...

I think you are so right about the types of people who are the ones reapplying. The majority of them appear to be like that, and even if they are not I think it gives off a really bad look.

Haha, I hope undressing in public doesn't become too popular, I think that would be too strange for me! :)

I would love it if you had any topic suggestions, that would be incredible.

  3. I guess people applying a full face of make up in the bathroom is a little annoying. Mainly for the inconvenience of trying to work around them to wash your hands haha!
One thing that annoys me is when someone is applying a full face of makeup using testers in a store. Not only do they look hopeless but it's so gross!

I also agree with dawn with the hair brushing...I have also seen someone clip their nails on the train *shudders*

    1. Yes, the inconvenience of it all certainly does come in to play! Oh my god, I hadn't thought about testers but they are even worse! Way worse.

Yuck, I'm not sure I could cope with the nail clippings either.

  4. I know that people don't like other people doing their makeup in public but I started to do it recently as it gives me more time to sleep in :P It doesn't matter if I give myself more time to get ready as I'll just find something else to do and still end up running late!

I'm sure I would be someone who annoys you as I put on concealer on the train to work in the morning (that's all I wear most days!) but I only do it if I'm sitting alone and at the back of the carriage. I'd rather annoy 1 or 2 people on the train than make tonnes of customers at work look at my pimples.

    1. Thank you so much for your alternate side to the topic! :)

I have to give you credit there - sleep is a very, very precious thing, and I guess when you are short on time it is easier to apply concealer on the run than it is to eat your weetbix! :)

Like you said, I guess if you annoy one grumpy person like myself and feel more confident about yourself for the day then it is definitely worth it!

  5. Seeing people put on makeup in public doesn't really bother me but I personally don't like putting on makeup in public, even if it's just lip gloss or lipstick.

The reason is because I feel that people will think I'm "fake",stuck up, vain or one of those cake-faces that wear way too much makeup. Like in the movies, when you see those "popular" girls apply their lip gloss while holding their compact mirror. It just gives off a vain, obnoxious impression in the movies and I'm paranoid that people think that about me if I do it.
I know that sounds weird but it's true :P

Someone concealing something every hour would annoy me too though! It's like if I'm talking to someone who constantly touches their hair - that's annoying.

    1. Thanks for commenting Sheri, I totally agree with you about the message that it seems to give off. Whether it is a good thing or a bad thing, we (at least I do) certainly make judgements and someone applying a full face of makeup continuously makes me think that they are terribly vain.

I'm not even exaggerating when I say it was literally every hour. She must have been so insecure, but by the end of the day (and 12 layers later) it looked unbelievably awful.

  6. I don't really mind it when people touch up their makeup in public. I would find it a little weird if I ever saw someone doing more than just a touch up in a public restroom (thankfully I've never seen it!), especially if they did have a bunch of products spread out over the bench.
I do reapply lippy when out in public because I love wearing lipstick, and sometimes face powder but that's usually in the back room at work. I have actually put on a full face of makeup once in a public bathroom though! But it was after all the shops had closed and I was getting ready to go to a party straight after work.

    1. I reapply lip products too, usually just balms and glosses but I wouldn't hesitate with lippy either. I don't often see people reapplying a full face, but on the odd occasion I do.
