Fake glasses - I'm not trying to insult you

So recently I purchased a pair of glasses. Contrary to, uh, logical reasoning, I don't have vision problems. These glasses contain no fancy lens but rather do nothing to enhance my already adequate eyesight in any way. They're not the oversized, thick-framed hipster glasses commonly viewed in a negative light, but rather petite little square shaped frames that don't even try to make a statement. So why on Earth did I hand over the cash (which actually wasn't very much I might add) for an essentially useless item? The same reason that I own more than one T-shirt and shoes in more than three different colours. Because I like how it looks.

You may be thinking that I am painfully vain. Maybe that is so, but at the end of the day we all have to wear clothes and I would assume that at least 50% of the female population (a statistic based on no reliable evidence whatsoever, just the inner workings of my estimation making brain) in the Western world enjoy a bit of unnecessary accessorising with jewellery, scarves, bags etc, etc. To wear a pair of glasses when I in fact do not rely on them in any way is to me, simply another way of completing an outfit. Why should the vision impaired ladies get to have all the fun?

Well apparently not everyone agrees. After having made the spontaneous purchase I started to doubt my actions. A little web surfing scientific research produced a whole other side to the argument whereby those who actually needed glasses for medical reasons were a little extremely irate, finding it to be a huge insult. It seems that when it comes to the fake glasses trend, you can't sit on the fence about it - you either love it and embrace it with all your heart or you hate it with a deep loathing from the bottom of your soul. Why so extreme?

I do appreciate the haters' point of view to a small extent. It must be frustrating seeing someone frolicking about with a pair of glasses they don't need when they themselves have no choice but to wear the frames they were assigned to upon discovering that they couldn't actually see anything.

Maybe short ladies feel the same way when they see a tall lady wearing sky scraper heels. I mean, tall ladies shouldn't be allowed to wear heels because they've been blessed with the long leg gene. It's simply preposterous that they indulge in a bit of shoe shopping in the heels section of the store when short ladies aren't even given a choice whether they want to wear flats! Similarly those with blonde hair should not be allowed to dye it brown, nor should straight haired ladies curl their hair because....because...I find it insulting.

See how ridiculous it is?! Of course tall ladies can wear heels, and in the same way those blessed with 20/20 vision should be allowed to play around with 'useless' (but oh-so pretty) glasses. It's not meant to be an insult, and we really do sympathise with those who don't have a choice, but when it comes down to it we're not really doing all that much harm are we? We always want what we don't have when it comes to the superfluous world of fashion, and in this case we feel like we are missing out.

Take it as a compliment. So many people are opting for 'fake' glasses these days that surely you're getting the message...glasses are attractive. You heard me, your glasses look great and to be honest they look so great I'm jealous and have decided to buy my own. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, isn't that right?

Basically, I've bought my fake glasses and I like how they look. I will admit, I do feel a bit silly wearing them around people who know my vision is fine, but around the house or around people I don't know, I love to wear them. I'm not wearing them to offend you, I'm not wearing them to impress you, I'm wearing them because I like them and there's nothing more to it.

I would love to know how you feel about the fake glasses trend, even if you are extremely against my opinion!

  1. I love this Candice! For a while in highschool I had to wear glasses due to my poor eyesight (I'm thinking a lot of it had to do with the stress of school though) and occasionally I still need them for reading etc. I certainly don't have any problem seeing people wearing fake glasses. I'll admit, some do a look a bit silly (not all, usually just the ones without glass in them) but I definitely don't hate on it! Each to their own! I totally agree with everything you said! I'll wear what I want, it's not for anyone else, it's for me!
Wear those glasses with pride! :D
(By the way they totally suit your dog, too!) haha xx

    1. Thanks Jasmine! I agree that fake glasses can look silly when they have no glass in them but like you, I don't see the need to be so hateful about it. As for the dog, he wasn't a fan of my new glasses :)

  2. I completely agree with you! I've had 20/20 vision for most of my life and I've actually always wanted to wear glasses, though i don't have the guts to wear them out in public, but i just love the way they look :)

    1. I don't think I have the guts to wear them out in public either, but I have enjoyed wearing it around the house so much! Like you I think glasses look absolutely amazing :) x

  3. I don't wear glasses 100% of the time but I have to wear them for school to see the board, and movies, etc and personally because I don't have to wear them full time (yet) I don't find them too annoying, but I know my sister hates having to wear glasses. I have no problem at all about wearing them as accessories, I remember going to the optometrist and trying on a million pairs and getting excited for when I had to wear them, haha. I think some frames can look really trendy and can definitely add that extra something to a look. I know some glasses-wearers have multiple pairs to coordinate with different outfits, so why shouldn't non-glasses-wearers be able to too?

    1. Thanks for your thoughts! I can imagine that having to wear them all the time could get quite frustrating. Lots of my glasses wearing friends have many pairs like you said, and they change them up according to what they are wearing. x

  4. *Sigh* Personally I think it's pretty tacky, considering that the fake nerd glasses fad died in 2009. But what I find even more tacky is your dismissal of the other side of the argument as "ridiculous". Seriously? People don't NEED high heels or blonde hair to function comfortably on a daily basis. A more fitting example would be riding in a wheelchair when your legs work fine, or using an inhaler when you don't have asthma. See how silly that sounds? Wear your glasses all you want, ain't no law against it, but don't get pissy if somebody is upset by you using their physical disability as a fashion statement, because they would have every right to be.

    1. Thanks for commenting! You're right, the fake nerd glasses fad is pretty outdated, so it's fortunate that I have no intention of actually being a part of that and that I am simply playing around with glasses because I enjoy it and it makes me feel good in the same way that fashion and makeup does. I'm cool that people think it's tacky, I don't like everyone else's taste in fashion either.

Point taken, it was a little harsh of me to dismiss the alternate side of the argument as ridiculous, and perhaps your comparisons are more fitting, but I think my points still stand. I find it hard to believe that someone who wears glasses wouldn't treat them as an accessory despite relying upon them and I think for someone to be so angry about the fact that a kid is wearing a pair of glasses with clear glass is a little excessive.

      Thanks for your input.

  5. I have to wear glasses 24/7 but I think "fake" glasses are totally fine. They really help frame your face and it's like jewellery or makeup! Can be used to enhance your features.
In fact, if I don't wear glasses, I dislike how I look because my face and eyes just look empty and small without them.

  6. Don't really see why people get worked up about it! Nobody who wears them means harm. Let all 4-eyed humans be in peace!

    1. So true, no one intends to cause trouble by wearing fake glasses. I love that, "let all 4-eyed humans be in peace!" Thanks so much for your comment!

  7. Omg I actually wore "fake" glasses in high school because I too liked the way it looked. People insisted they try my glasses on and "couldn't tell a difference" so I think some people suspected it was just for looks which embarrassed me. But I now wear glasses for vision correction and I totally don't judge people for wearing them for looks! But I understand that people do make you feel like shit for wearing them when you don't need them so it was a bit of a sigh of relief when I needed "real" ones (not for my wallet though!)

    1. Wow, that's brave of you, I'm not sure that I could wear them to school because as you said, people make you feel embarrassed about it. It's a shame so many people feel like that, no one is doing any harm. Oh gosh, glasses are so very expensive! Loved hearing your thoughts x

  8. I have to disagree with you on this one. Your comparison wasn't just. Wearing fake glasses is like wearing a brace for fashion, or going around in a wheelchair to look fashionable. Sometimes, eyesight can be a real disability. I have terrible eyesight, and I can only see a couple of inches in front of my face clearly, the rest is a blur. My glasses are a necessity. You can put on and take off your glasses as you like, you don't need them. The same with a tall women, being short isn't a disability, and heels aren't something to help you through that disability, it's just a trait. You can survive while being short, whereas people who need glasses need them to survive and function in everyday life, just like someone in a wheelchair or someone with a brace needs it to survive and function. The fact that your justifying fake glasses is like making fun of people that actually need to wear real glasses. It's ridiculous and cruel.
